Empresa Portuaria Chacabuco’s facilities are located within a 6.4 hectare precint, divided in two zones: one including the conventional multipurpose quays and the other, the ferry terminal.
Docks:
This is the area where all activities related to conventional vessels assistance (including bulk, reefer, container transporters and industrial fishing vessels) take place. In this zone there are 3 quays with 5 berths.
Dock Nº1 stands out in this zone; with a berthing front of 71.5 m long and a dolphin wharf 42.5 m towards the south, it generates a mooring site of 114 m. This is the principal quay of the area, assisting commercial ships, including metal carriers, reefers, container transporters, tourist cruises and fishing vessels. In the present, it is capable of assisting vessels up to 190 m long and of 9.6 m of draught. This quay forms the port’s Berth Nº1 and is its most relevant commercial site.
Dock Nº2 follows in importance. Its foundation is a metallic structure with a wooden bearing, and it has three berthing sites for different kinds of crafts. This dock is used mainly by fishing vessels, nonetheless, it is also used by passenger ships and, eventually, by container transporters.
Finally, the Quay Zone has a floating dock that consists of a cement structure with two 24 m berthing fronts and another one 12 m long. Lately, the requests to use this facility have increased considerably, assisting tourist vessels, smaller fishing crafts, bay motorboats, etc. This dock also provides services to vessels belonging to the Maritime Authority used for maritime police tasks and to control the safety of sea operations.
Warehouses:
In this area stand two warehouses for stacking goods. One is located opposite Dock Nº1 and it is 2.100 m2. The other is in front of Dock Nº2 and is 2.340 m2. In the present, they are being used for storing mineral concentrate and salmon food.
Esplanades:
The port has a paved esplanade of 4000 m2 used for stacking containers and parking trucks, among other purposes. It is a support area to docks Nº1 and Nº2.
The Ferry Terminal or Berth Nº5 structure is founded on five cylindrical cells made of plane steel piles that form a 44 m front. The latter is divided in five mooring ramps of different levels, which are used by ferries according to the tide cycle. This terminal is used for transferring cargo and light vehicles going through the Puerto Montt – Puerto Chacabuco / Laguna San Rafael route.
This terminal has an adjacent gravel support area of around 4000 m2, used mainly for parking vehicles related to embarking and disembarking of passengers.
